Got most of my planned activities done. Added yet another rabbet to the back arch to accept the back-plate. Sure glad I remembered that as it cannot be done later. Also made-up many candidate blank pieces of walnut lumber for the hood dial mask, door and top-plates. Planed numerous pieces to 1/4", 3/8" and 3/4". I need to let them settle for a few days, then forward with the dial mask. I'll be using my circle-cutter to again make the arch curves. Should be fun. The dial mask is only 1/4" and my plan is to lap-joint it together. This means that I'll need to make the lap-joint sections only be 1/8". I believe I can do it with the router and a miter gauge. Glad I have the proper tools. I'm anxious to get started on it. I still need to make the dial mask template which I've decided to do with poster board rather than the Luan plywood. It should't take me long tomorrow to make the template as I have plenty of poster board. Enjoy the slideshow below!
Bitter cold here and my workshop isn't much warmer. So I decided to wait until tomorrow to work on the next steps. See you then!
I decided to spend the day addressing the fact that the clock dial was not level or plumb. It is important that I remedy before pursuing the mask and door. So today was the day I spent on these details. Following that, I went ahead and placed the backplate on the case. It turns out that the backplate is just barely tall enough. It joins the back arch fitting into a rabbet that I just learned I need to make. Tomorrow, I will make that rabbet cut and start planing more lumber for the mask, door and top slats. Please see the photos below from today. Click to enlarge.
You'd think I was building the Eiffel Tower, but here are some more pics on my clock build. I finished-up the details on the hood sides and set them [un-glued] into the supporting sill [which is dadoed to receive them]. Then I placed the hood assembly on the case. I am very happy with how it is looking! The proportions are just right. Tomorrow, I will go to Lowes to get some Luan plywood to make the mask template. I will likely then make the mask before glueing the hood assembly. The mask template will also serve as the door template. I continue to build from my own design, but have seen so many nice clocks on the Internet that I've grabbed the best ideas of which there were many. Please play and enjoy the slideshow of today's pics below. PS: my clock is still tick-tocking! A busy day today. Re-mounted the clock works so I can get the most precise measurements. Then, trimmed, dadoed and rabbeted the hood sides. I still have work to do on the sides and that should be complete tomorrow. See pics below. Click to enlarge.
