I've been especially busy lately with contractors and grandkids. But today, I did put together my Kobalt table saw. I plan to get some "test" wood tomorrow to become savvy on its use before I start cutting my valuable seasoned walnut. I'll also likely attempt to true-up the sides on a piece of walnut using a technique described on the internet. I'm also going to have to decide on beveled vs. canted corners. While I still have numerous other projects in the works [my grandson's rc sailboat I'm making for his upcoming birthday and painting the inside of the house], I am anxious to make some headway on this clock-building project and certainly expect to complete it this year. I recently picked-up a set of tall case clock bonnet door hinges on eBay. These are hard to find. One additional item I added to our garage is a dehumidifier. I keep it at a constant 40-45% humidity so the wood stays nice and tight. See photos below from today. Click to enlarge.
I've learned that the proper name for the corners mentioned in my previous blog entry is canted corners.
Tonight I saw on eBay a clock that had an interesting corner joint. My original thought was to use a 45-degree bevel [miter] for the corners. And I still may. But will certainly consider, and test, using a corner joint similar to that used on the base of the grandfather clock shown in the photo below. Several options on this. The first is to rip a 45-degree piece off of a square stock and wedge it in using biscuits. The second, is to use a router with a birds-mouth bit. I'm going to test the first option after I get my table saw setup.
Today, my wife and I headed to Lowes to get the material that I needed to build a thickness planer jig. The jig will allow me to get better results when I pass the larger walnut lumber through my new thickness planer. All worked as planned. My objective today was to ensure that I could mill-down the 1"+ lumber to exactly 3/4". In that I will be joining lumber using butt joints and miter joints, this step was critical. It worked well and my wife was a good sport about me making a mess of our newly-cleaned-out garage. Made sure we wore ear protection. Next time I'll add a mask and eye protection. Enjoy the photos below and I will be adding more soon. |
